Defining ultra processed foods can be tricky. There is no universal definition of what constitutes ultra processed food. In some cases, ultra processed foods can be defined as industrial formulations that typically include additives, preservatives, and refined ingredients not found in home kitchens. The fact is Mom’s Meals does not produce any meals containing the following ingredients commonly found in ultra-processed foods: synthetic food dyes, added MSG, high fructose corn syrup, non-nutritive sweeteners (e.g., sucralose), partially hydrogenated oils or added trans fats, or synthetic preservatives banned in EU.
Mom’s Meals supports a variety of health conditions and uses evidence-based dietary guidelines to ensure our meals meet the needs of our clients with chronic conditions. For example:
- Meals for people with diabetes or A1C =9.0 meet the American Diabetes Association Standards of Care
- Patients with Congestive Heart Failure or Hypertension receive meals that comply with the NIH DASH eating plan
- Meals for patients with renal disease meet the National Kidney Foundation’s (NKF) Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) Clinical Practice Guidelines
In addition, meals do not contain excessive sugar or salt. We use the following guidelines, depending on menu type:

The trays Mom’s Meals uses are not harmful. Our trays do not contain BPAs, phthalates, brominated and organophosphate flame retardants which are the harmful chemicals of concern in other black plastics.
Yes. The bioengineered ingredients found in our meals are as healthful and safe to eat as their non-bioengineered or genetically modified (GMO) food ingredient counterparts. In fact, some GMO plants have been modified to improve nutritional value.
